How do I retrieve confidential information through Gmail?
This article explains how to ask someone to send you confidential information securely from your Gmail inbox, using the Secure Exchanges secure envelope. It covers the situation where your contact has to return a password, a document or a credit card number to you. If you wish to retrieve confidential information (password, documents or credit card) from a person who does not have a Secure Exchanges licence, you can send them a secure envelope on which they can safely return the requested information to you.
Prerequisites
- The Secure Exchanges extension is installed on Gmail and your licence is activated. If needed, see How do I install and activate Secure Exchanges on Gmail?.
- Your recipient does not need a Secure Exchanges licence to return the information to you.
Step 1: Write your email
- Compose a new email in Gmail.
- Enter your recipient, the subject and your message, as you normally would.
Step 2: Insert the secure envelope
- In the compose window, click the "Envelop" button.
- Choose the envelope that suits the kind of confidential information you are asking for and the language of your recipient.
Step 3: Send your request
Send your email as you normally would. The secure envelope lets your recipient return the requested information to you securely, without needing a Secure Exchanges licence.
Troubleshooting
- The "Envelop" button does not appear in Gmail: check that the extension is installed and that your licence is activated, by following How do I install and activate Secure Exchanges on Gmail?.
- Secure Exchanges looks inactive in your Gmail account: the extension may have been temporarily disabled with the Enable/Disable button. See How do I disable Secure Exchanges on Gmail?.
